A PNG is a grid of pixels: blow it up and the edges go soft. An SVG is a set of shapes, so it stays sharp at any size, from a favicon to a shop window. That is why printers, sign makers, embroiderers and Cricut users ask for “a vector file”.
Tracing works best on flat artwork: logos, icons, clip art, stamps, line drawings and text. A clean PNG of a logo comes back as a handful of coloured shapes that you can edit in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or Canva.
A photo is different. It has thousands of colour shades, so its SVG becomes a big file of small patches, like a detailed poster. Our Photo mode keeps it close to the original, but the file is often several megabytes. For a photo you usually want the PNG or JPG itself, unless you need a stylised vector look.
