Remove a background now โA jacket or a phone has one clean outline. Hair has hundreds of thin, semi-transparent strands, and the background shows between them. Old 'magic wand' selections either chop the hair into a helmet shape or leave a halo of the old background around it. A model trained on real portraits predicts a soft edge per strand instead of one hard line, which is why the result looks natural rather than cut with scissors.
AI does the heavy lifting, but the photo still matters. Contrast between the hair and the background is the single biggest factor: dark hair against a light wall cuts beautifully, dark hair against a dark doorway is hard for any tool. Even, diffuse light beats harsh shadows.
Even a good cut can leave a faint edge where the light wrapped around the hair. Almost every hair problem makes sense once you know that a cut-out isn't a yes/no decision per pixel. The alpha channel stores 256 levels, and along a hair line most pixels are partly you and partly the room behind you โ a strand thinner than a pixel makes that pixel maybe 40% hair, 60% wall. That's what "soft edge" means technically.

The fix for the hard cases is upstream and physical: fill more of the frame with the head. Standing closer, or shooting at your camera's full resolution instead of a cropped screenshot, means each strand is two or three pixels wide instead of half a pixel โ and a strand that's actually there can be kept, while one that's implied cannot. Upscaling afterwards doesn't help; the information was never captured. This site accepts up to 99 MB and 40 megapixels, so there's no reason to downscale before uploading.
