Remove a white background
Plenty of logos, product renders and scanned graphics already sit on a plain white background, but "sits on white" and "is actually transparent" are two different things. A white background baked into a JPG still shows up as a white box the moment you place it on a coloured page, a dark slide, or another photo. Hair is the classic hard case: flyaway strands, a soft fringe and fur don't have one clean outline to trace, so hand-tracing either eats the strands or leaves a pale halo around the head. The model is trained on exactly this kind of edge, so it keeps wisps of hair and pet fur intact in a single pass instead of chopping them into a helmet-like silhouette. It isn't infinite (a single stray hair against a busy, similarly-coloured background can still get lost) but on a normal portrait against a reasonably distinct background it holds the soft edge far better than a manual selection. If a patch is left behind, the restore brush brings strands back and the erase brush trims a stray edge.
Logos & graphics
Logos, icons and scanned line art are the easy end: they're flat, high-contrast and sit against a plain background, which is the case AI segmentation handles most reliably. Background remover for a big or large file
Big photos are fine. There is one upload limit of 99 MB for everyone and no upgrade prompt when you remove background from a large file. Image size is counted twice, though: in megabytes for the upload limit, and in pixels for the limit below.
The caveat: 99 MB is rarely what stops a big photo. A 30-megapixel scan or an old high-resolution TIFF can be well under 99 MB and still get turned away, because the free tier's real ceiling is 30 megapixels: a modern phone shot or a large scan can hit that resolution while sitting at just a few MB. If a big background remover job gets rejected, it's almost always the pixel count, not the file size.
Remove background from a GIF
This tool works on still images only (JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC), not an animated GIF. Remove background from Excel, PDF and EPS
Excel has no comparable built-in tool, so how to remove a background in Excel comes down to bringing the photo here first and pasting the finished transparent PNG back in. The same goes for graphics you want on a PowerPoint slide.
PDF and EPS files are not read directly. To remove background colour from a PDF file or an EPS file, export the artwork to JPG or PNG first; the tool reads images only, not vector containers or PDF pages.

Glass, circles, emoji and Google Photos
Glass and other transparent or reflective subjects are a hard case: the model has to decide where a see-through object ends and the background behind it begins, and it does noticeably better when the glass has a visible edge or highlight than with perfectly clear glass against a matching background. The cutout always keeps the subject's real silhouette rather than a circle; crop that PNG to a circle afterwards with a crop tool if a profile picture needs it.
A physical green screen exists to make cutting out easier; the AI cutout does the same job without one, and works on an ordinary background as well as on a solid colour. What we actually measured
Numbers from our own server, not an estimate. We started logging which page a job came from on 8 August 2026, and from then until 21 August the tool on this page ran 24 times; none of those jobs failed once accepted. Most people use the tool on the homepage instead: across the whole site, our server finished 335 jobs between 13 July and 21 August. Three uploads were turned away before processing even started, which with a 99 MB ceiling is almost always an oversized or unreadable file, not the AI choking on a hard photo.
The counter on the homepage is a much bigger number because it counts more: every job this server has finished since early August, including Magic erase, the free API and PicReviver's photo-to-3D tool, which uses this cutout. Use also grew after August; in September alone the server finished 5,686 jobs.
The files themselves were modest: across the 195 uploads logged sitewide in the same 40 days, the average was 1.18 MB and the largest we actually processed was 28.24 MB, comfortably inside the 99 MB limit, and every sample we measured landed well clear of it; none came within 10% of the ceiling. In practice, people aren't uploading giant files to test the limit: they're dropping in an ordinary phone photo or product shot, which is exactly the case this tool is built around rather than a deliberate stress test of the upload ceiling.

Can I remove a background in Google Slides?
Not really. Slides has no AI cutout, so how to remove background in Google Slides comes down to its mask tool: the icon next to crop, set to a shape, hides everything outside the outline. That is cropping, not removal; the pixels are still there. How to remove background on Google Slides mobile is even more limited, because the apps only crop to a rectangle.
