A plain, even backdrop in seconds

ID, passport and visa photos almost always call for a plain, evenly-lit background, usually white or light blue, with no shadows. Shooting that at home is fiddly. Instead, take a clear front-facing photo against any wall, let BGNinja cut you out, and place a solid white or light-blue colour behind you.

Honest note on official requirements

Why the background is the part that gets photos rejected

Nearly every ID-photo specification asks for the same thing in slightly different words: a plain, light, uniform background. Note "uniform" — that's the word that fails people. A white wall photographed at home is almost never uniform, because you're standing near it and casting a shadow on it. To a reviewer that shadow is a background variation, and the photo gets bounced even though the wall is genuinely white.

Compositing solves exactly that one problem, and solves it completely: the background becomes a single value at every pixel, with no shadow, no gradient and no corner darker than the middle. That's more uniform than any physical setup you can build at home.

What it does not fix, and it's important to be clear about it:

• Shadows on your face or neck. Those are part of you, so they stay. Face a window, or put a lamp in front rather than above.
• Head size, framing and eye position. A cut-out doesn't move you within the frame. If your head is too small in the shot, it stays too small.
• Expression, glasses glare, hair over the eyes, a tilted head. All still yours to get right.
• Print size and resolution requirements. Different question entirely.

So the honest workflow is: get the photo itself right first — camera at eye level, arm's length or further, even light on your face, neutral expression, no shadow across your features — and then let the tool make the backdrop perfect. Getting a photo that a person will accept

Beyond the background, five things do most of the work. None of them need equipment:

• Stand well away from the wall. A metre or more. Distance is what stops your shadow landing on it, and it also softens the background in a way that helps the cut-out find your outline.
• Camera at eye level, not below. Held low, a phone gives you an upward angle that most specifications explicitly disallow. Prop it up on a shelf or a stack of books.
• Back off and use the main camera. Selfie cameras are wide-angle, and wide-angle at arm's length distorts a face — nose bigger, ears smaller. Have someone take it from two metres, or use a timer with the rear camera.
• Front light, not overhead. A ceiling light puts shadows in your eye sockets and under your nose. Face a window instead.
• Plain clothing, and not a light top. A white shirt against a white background makes your shoulders disappear at the edge; you get a floating head, which reviewers notice.

And the honest caveat that belongs on any page like this: requirements vary by country, by document type and over time, and the authority reviewing your photo is the only one whose opinion counts. Check the current official specification for your document before you submit, rather than trusting any tool — including this one — to know it.
